Celebration of World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED), 5th June, a global platform to inspiring people for actions to protect and restore the Earth, has began as per the resolution of United Nation’s conference on Human Environment at Stockholm City of Sweden in 1972. Although, the WED was first celebrated in the year 1973, but from the year 1974 the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries under the leadership of United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP). World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing ‘something’ to take care of the Earth. Starting from the solo actions to mass involvement that ‘something’ can be at local, regional, national or global scale. Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme decided by UNEP that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental issue.
Pollution Control Board, Assam has been organizing different activities as a part of WED celebration and to raising awareness on the UNEP theme among the common mass in every occasions across the State under the leadership of its Head Office located at Guwahati and the Regional Laboratory cum Offices (RLOs) / Regional Offices (ROs) located at Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Tezpur, Nagaon, Silchar, Bongaigaon, Guwahati and Kamrup (Amingaon). The Board has also jointly organized the State Level Function of WED with Environment and Forests, Department, Government of Assam in many occasions.
The activities organized by the Board in the last few years to mark the celebration World Environment Day have been arranged under the following sub-head for the convenience of presentation –
- Plantation and Distribution of Saplings.
- Drawing and Painting Competition among students.
- Walkathon and Procession.
- Public Awareness Meet cum Discussion.
- Other Activities.
